Have you been wondering how you might be able to volunteer in Thailand while you’re here visiting or living in the Land of Smiles? I’m going to give you a run down of different organizations suited to those passing through or longer-term opportunities for ex-pats or travellers. The following organizations are most suited to those who want a short-term volunteer experience in Thailand.

1. Volunteer Spirit
First let’s start out with short-term opportunities in Thailand. There is an organization called Volunteer Spirit which is mostly targeted to Thais, but I’ve been on one of their trips and it’s been a fantastic way to get to know some very friendly and interesting Thai people and get a real flavor for the country. Unfortunately, their website is in Thai but if you drop them a line they can let you know if they have anything going on when you’re here. They organize monthly trips and they cover a variety of areas ranging from painting schools, building clay houses, and making sandals for hill tribe children. They arrange all of the transportation and have a central meeting place at their office in Bangkok so it is pretty easy to manage as you just have to show up and be ready to work.
Website: http://www.volunteerspirit.org/
Contact name:

Contact e-mail address: volunteerspirit@gmail.com
Location: Meeting place at their office on New Petchburi Road
Duration: half-day, one day, or two day trips
Cost: Minimal and depends on project location and length (covers transportation, food, project materials and accommodation if applicable)

2. Education Development Foundation (EDF)
If you’re traveling with a group of people and want to do some volunteer work you can get in touch with the Education for Development Foundation. They mostly do work in the Northeast of Thailand but also work in Laos, and Cambodia. They work primarily with children and focus on improving educational opportunities for the poorest of the poor in Thailand. You can check out their website for more information and contact them for specific information. They have staff that speak English and Japanese and will be more than happy to help organize a trip for your group. They mainly work in a region of Thailand called Isan.
Website: http://www.edfthai.org
Contact name: Ann
Contact email address: nippitt@edfthai.org
Location: Isan (northeastern Thailand)
Duration: Varies depending on group/project
Cost: Varies depending on project and duration

 3. Baandinthai (building clay houses)
They build earth/clay house for homeless people, monks and sometimes as earth libraries for the community. The staff are very easy-going and friendly and it’s usually a one time weekend trip so it’s suitable for just about anyone. Be warned though- it is hard work, but lots of fun and a pretty cool thing to know how to do!
Website: http://www.baandinthai.com
Contact: Mr. Surat Sarakam
E-mail: yobaandin@hotmail.com
Location: Varies
Duration: Usually a weekend
Cost: Minimal

4. Grassroots Human Rights Education and Development (GHRE)

Hello,

I am a 4th year dental student from the University of Birmingham, UK.
We have an Elective Scheme coming up for summer 2010 and I was wondering whether you might have any hands-on projects/volunteer work which myself and a group of approximately 4 other students could get involved with please?
We are keen to visit/work in a developing country with particular interest in Thailand, South America or Mexico – however we are open to any suggestions!
Please get back to me as soon as possible regarding this Elective Project and details of schemes you may have!

Many thanks,

Safaa Ebrahim

Dear Safaa,
Thank you for your email and interest in volunteering in Thailand. Operation Smile is an organization that might be suitable given your particular background. They can help organize something for you and your friends. They work to repair facial deformities in children and are based in the US. They are not religously affiliated and have been working in Thailand since 1997. I’ve listed the contact details for them below for you and I have a few other ideas which I’ll email to you later once I gather up some more information. I hope that you find this information useful. Let me know if this looks like something you’d be
interested in and an update about your expereinces would be fantastic. More to come soon!

All the best,
RVT

Hi there,

I am a Masters (by research) student, studying towards an MPhil degree in Neurosciences (medical research) at The University of Melbourne, in Australia. I am very keen on bridging the Neuro research world with ..people. This is because most of our research happens first in animals ..it is all too easy to forget what you are trying to achieve: I want to get back to in touch with people, real lives and issues. I have to admit, I am in love with Thailand and Thai people. Is there anything that you can offer me (info etc) ..I would like to volunteer and or teach english or science in Thailand once I finish my degree ( next year). More info will be greatly appreciated.

I am visiting Bangkok for 3 days in the new year – super excited!

Many thanks,
Heena M.

Hi,
I’m a 24 y.o Australian travelling Thailand for a few months. I’m keen to do some volenteer work however the websites are very confusing. Unfortunately, time wise I only have Southern Thailand to do before heading to Cambodia. Any advice on volunteering, or websites to visit would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Steph

Dear Safaa,
We have a 1000 children who would greatly benefit from your help. R35 is a school in Khao Lak that was built to replace several that were destroyed by the tsunami. After several years we now have a fully functioning dental operatory and are seeking dental volunteers at any capacity level. We offer free room and board on campus. Stay for as little or as long as you like. Please visit our new website at http://www.Uberhygienist.com
Kind Regards.
